In April 1980, Christie and I were staying at her folks’ vacation trailer just outside of Key West. We headed downtown that morning and were amazed to see both sides of the road packed with trucks with empty boat trailers all the way to Key West. No cell phones, lol – but found out we were smack-dab in the middle of the Mariel Boatlift, the Cuban Exodus of refugees fleeing Cuba.
At the same time desperate Haitians that survived the journey in flimsy overcrowded craft, or prey to human traffickers were washing ashore in Delray Beach where we lived, but unlike most Marielitos that found a new home here, many were interned at the Krome Detention Center in Homestead and sent back to the dire conditions in Haiti.
I wrote Florida Street about that disparity in our treatment of refugees back in the early nineties. I had no idea that 30 years later it would sadly still be so current. It’s the closing cut on my album Florida Street.
